Thoughts On Memorial Day

June 1, 2010

I want to thank those who have vandalized the Right to Life billboards in various locations throughout the state. “A picture is worth a thousand words.” The sign near Big Timber depicted the hands of a young woman and an infant reaching for each other, and the caption read, “Take my hand, not my life.  Abortion kills babies and hurts women.” Thank you to the vandals who have made my case far more successfully than I ever could have.  They have proven that there are those who deal with the things they don’t like by destroying them. Some people don’t like the truth. And so we have abortion.  And we have vandalism.

It is currently popular to tell a little child who acts out, “Use your words.” This seems to be a lesson in First Amendment rights.  You have a right to speak up, but not to take physical action against someone else because you don’t know how else to handle your anger. I have been the target of some of these “words” by the people who promote the right to abortion.

Usually I attribute their anger to the probability that they have been hurt by abortion. This is supported by the thousands of women who have gained their collective voice in the Silent no More movement. They are saying, “I regret my abortion.” Further proving my assertion that abortion hurts women, is the current surge of women who are seeking post-abortion counseling for help with the emotional, mental, and physical aftermath of their abortions.  These include, but are not limited to:  recurring nightmares (when they CAN sleep), flashbacks, deep sorrow, which they sometimes try to numb with alcohol or drugs, and miscarriages of their subsequent wanted pregnancies.  In addition, the research has shown a definite increase in incidence of breast cancer in post-abortive women.

We can quibble over semantics. If you refuse to call it a baby - fine.  She has brain waves, a heartbeat, her own DNA, often a different blood type than the mother, and fingerprints.  Call her what YOU want, but she is a tiny human being with potential and having infinite intrinsic value. Isn’t this the definition of a baby? Abortion kills babies.

We have just commemorated Memorial Day.  This means many things to many people.  For some, this is the day to remember those members of our own families who have died and we place flowers on their graves. For some, this is the day to honor our dead war heroes.  For some, it is a day of mourning for fallen comrades. For some, it is a day to call the members of our families who have served, to help them through some of their painful memories. For some, it is a day to thank the veterans and those who are still serving in the military.  I think we should remember the victims, as well as the heroes.  In some cases they are one and the same.  I choose to remember it this way.

Please note the irony in the timing of this:
On January 22, 1973 - The United States Supreme Court announced its landmark decision, Roe v. Wade, which effectively legalized abortion on demand.  There have been 54,000,000 casualties to date - and that is only counting the babies - not the women who have also been hurt.

On January 23, 1973 - President Nixon announced that an agreement had been reached which would "end the war and bring peace with honor."

The theme song of the anti-war demonstrators during the War in Vietnam was, “Give peace a chance.” They characterized the soldiers and returning vets as “baby killers.”

We brought our Vietnam veterans home to a hypocritical nation which had almost in the same breath made baby-killing the law of the land.

Again, I thank you for destroying our billboards.  It proves my point, and gives us a chance to replace the signs with better ones.  Make no mistake about it, there will always be another billboard. You can’t stop the truth, and there will always be someone to tell it. It may take us a while to raise the money, and it may be vandalized again, but there will always be another billboard.

There will always be those who want to stop the real baby killers.   And all that WE’RE saying is, “Give life a chance.”

Sincerely,
Lianna Karlin
