Message from Lianna Karlin, President, Right to Life of Montana, Autumn 2007 This summer two events reminded me that our values in the United States have become a tangled mess of double-standards. In the Michael Vick case, many people were horrified by the exploitation of dogs for the purpose of dog fights in which bets were being placed on the results. Many of the dogs were “executed”, either because they were losers or because they were too severely disabled to fight again. In other words they were of no further value to the owners. One could barely find a radio or TV news/talk program that was not focused on the subject. Moreover, some people wanted leniency for Vick because he was too “valuable” as a football player. (He plays for the Atlanta Falcons.) Whoopi Goldberg defended him on the basis that dog fighting is an accepted “sport” in the South, “For many people, dogs are sport,” Goldberg replied, and “it appeared it took awhile for Vick to realize that he was up against serious charges. I just thought it was interesting, because it seemed like a light went off in his head when he realized this was something that the entire country didn't appreciate,' she said. On the other hand, I received an on-line request to sign a thank-you card, addressed to attorneys who prosecuted the case. It read as follows: “We want to express a heartfelt thank you for your hard work in successfully prosecuting the Michael Vick case. Your work has been instrumental in shining a spotlight on the gruesome world of animal fighting in America, and is serving as a catalyst to increase enforcement of laws against this vicious activity.” Wow! A light went off in my head... Do Americans really need the same type of wake up call regarding abortion? What do we have to do to make them realize that abortion is not something that we “appreciate”? We express such compassion for the animals being exploited-even killed- for sport, but so little for the exploitation of pregnant women for profit, and the torture and execution of the innocent unborn, because someone has decided they have no value. Part two of my summer enlightenment, was the uproar over a Planned Parenthood clinic that was built in Aurora, Illinois. Planned Parenthood, as you well know, is the largest abortion provider in the country. They applied for and obtained a permit to build a facility on private property in Aurora under the name of the Gemini Health Corporation. I can’t help but wonder why Planned Parenthood, themselves, chose the name of the mythological twins. Having two-faces is the appropriate description for Planned Parenthood, pretending to have womens’ best interest on one face, and promoting abortions on the other; but why the self-chosen label? In Montana, there were 2119 abortions in 2006. Despite our best efforts, the parental notification bill we attempted to pass through the state legislature failed, demonstrating once again how urgent it is to vote Pro-Life. On the positive side, the U.S. Supreme Court has upheld the Partial Birth Abortion Ban as being Constitutional. We are currently working on a new ad demonstrating the double standard that exists where abortions in our youth are concerned. Our ads are running statewide on MTV, and we have a billboard that is moving from location to location, and several others across the state. We have made the Choose Life license plate available. We have increased our membership to 12 chapters. In addition, we are coordinating our efforts with the Pregnancy Outreach Centers statewide by helping to provide them with sonograms. In 2006, well over 1,200 Life Chains were built in America and Canada, and the focus is now on National Life Chain Sunday 2007—to be held October 7. This silent, peaceful demonstration is intended to raise our profile in the community and to pray en masse for an end to abortion. Several chapters in Montana have Life Chains planned. This is an activity that stresses church involvement. Your chapter can choose any day in October for the Life Chain, but most will try for the first Sunday.
