Message from Lianna Karlin, President, Right to Life of Montana, RTLMT Rally, 2006
Thank you for supporting the Right to Life. We know that if we don't speak up on their behalf, innocent victims will continue to be sacrificed for the sake of convenience. Though it is a cliche, most statements become cliches because they are so true: All it takes for evil to succeed is for good men and women do nothing. Your being here demonstrates your priorities. It shows that you are willing to stand up and defend those who cannot defend themselves.
Recent events have made me question the priorities of the American people as a whole. How many of us can name the Three Stooges, the Beatles, the Seven Dwarfs, or Santa's reindeer? But how many of us professed Christians can name Jesus' Twelve Disciples? How many of our former Presidents can we name? How many of us can name our Montana State Legislative Representative or Senator, our delegates to the United States Congress, our Representative to the United Nations, or the members of the United State Supreme Court?
Here is a list of names. Can you tell me what they have in common? John Warner, Brian Morris, James Nelson, William Leaphart, Patricia O'Brien Cotter, Jim Rice, and Karla Gray? These are the names of the Judges who sit on the Montana Supreme Court. This is the Court whose decisions impact human lives in Montana every day. This is the Supreme Court that set aside Montanan's legislation calling for a Physicians Only Bill, the bill requiring that all abortions be performed by qualified physicians; Parental Notification requiring that parents must be notified before an abortion could be performed on their minor daughters; the Fetal Pain Bill which gave women the option of having anesthesia for the unborn baby before it was aborted; the Unborn Victims of Violence bill (also known as Conner's bill) which makes the killing of a wanted unborn baby in the commission of a crime against the mother a crime, as well; the Partial Birth Abortion bill which would make illegal one of the most barbaric of late term abortions; and the Informed Consent bill, requiring that women be given full disclosure of possible complications before consenting to an abortion.
This is the way our Supreme Court has protected and defended us Montanans. And I am willing to bet that not more than one or two of you could have named these judges who continue to permit unrestricted and unregulated abortion in Montana. If we are going to educate other people about the truth of abortion in Montana, then we have to begin by educating ourselves.
We need to make the protection of the unborn more important than any other issue. We have to do this because those on the pro-death by choice side of this issue have made keeping abortion legal their priority. We need to make overturning Roe Versus Wade a priority in our lives. But we can't stop at that. We need to make changing the makeup of Montana's Courts and even its State Constitution a priority. If we fail to do that, then infanticide, assisted suicide, and involuntary euthanasia will follow as the reasonable next steps.
This week we saw the confirmation hearings of Judge Alito. The question and answer sessions and the Judicial Committee hearings demonstrated very plainly that the overwhelming majority of Democrats in Congress have two priorities: First - to maintain legalized abortion on demand and second - to oppose George Bush on every possible issue, and at every possible opportunity. They have abandoned independent thought and they have abandoned their ability to reason logically, in favor of the party line. They no longer have the welfare of their constituents or of their country as their primary objective. Despite indisputable proof that the unborn child is human in every aspect, they continue to believe that the right to privacy, the right to free choice, and the right to the integrity of one person's body, trumps the unalienable right to life of another equally Human being. Ethically speaking, if the unborn baby is a human being, and it is; then we, as a society, have not only a right, but an obligation to protect and to defend that human being.
If there were any doubt as to the intent of the framers of the United States Constitution, then I think it could be dispelled by reading the Preamble:
We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.
If they did not intend to protect and defend the right to life of their future children, then who do you think they meant by "our posterity"? Clearly, the fathers of our country took their role seriously. They intended to establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty not only for their contemporary generation, but for all future ones.
Again, thank you all for standing up for the small ones, and thank you for being here, today. Educate yourselves so that you can convince others. Remain steadfast in your resolve to see this cause to the right outcome. Be constant in your faith - and rely on the power of prayer. If we all do these things, then I know that we shall overcome. Please continue to be a strong voice for the culture of life and do everything in your power to help America get its priorities straight.
