September 2004 Click for information on the new Choose Life license plate

Dear Pro-Life Friend,

September 7, 2004

This is an exciting time for the Right to Life and Election 2004 presents tremendous opportunities for the pro-life community.  Please join us in accepting the challenges and seizing the opportunities that lie
directly ahead.  As the President of Montana Right to Life, I encourage you to join us in our common cause to restore protection for those vulnerable people whose lives are threatened by abortion, infanticide, and euthanasia. While I realize that there are other important issues to consider in this election cycle, I believe that the Right to Life is still the most urgent. No other issue represents such a loss of innocent life. 4000 babies are dying daily in American abortion clinics.  If you look at the sheer numbers, then not even the war in Iraq has affected so many.

The members of the Montana Right to Life Political Action Committee have compiled a list of candidates for the upcoming election whom we feel have voted in the past and will vote in the future to protect the right to life of the unborn, the aged, and the disabled. Our endorsement and support of a candidate is based on voting records, questionnaires, interviews, and personal recommendations by those who know them. You can view the list on this website.

With your help we can get this information on the candidates out to the pro-life voters statewide and hold our elected officials accountable.  This will enable us to make an informed choice in the November election; to continue to vote for those who have voted for pro-life legislation, and to
vote against those who have not. We will be able to speak to our friends on the issues with confidence. This year, Montana Right to Life will increase our educational efforts and work to build a strong grassroots pro-life community. Let me share with you some of the projects that are now in place:

*In January, for the third year in a row,  Montana Right to Life sponsored a statewide Rally for Life. About a hundred people attended the event in the rotunda of the Capitol Building in Helena and were inspired by speeches by Governor Judy Martz and other Pro-Life activists.  The Rally for Life proved to the skeptics and reminded everyone who attended that Montana's Pro-Life movement is alive and well.  It was inspiring for us all.   Start planning to join us next year.

*Last year, Montana Right to Life continued to champion pro-life public policy and to represent your pro-life voice in Helena during the legislative session. Our Executive Director , Gregg Trude, lobbied daily for  pro-life legislation, and made great strides in pushing our bills forward, as well as becoming a presence at the Capitol and building a rapport with the members of the legislature.

*As always, our focus is to educate people about the reality of abortion and its consequences.  Because the latest figures show those between the ages of 15 and 24 account for almost 60% of abortions in Montana, we must help young women understand abortion's risks and alternatives. Montana Right to Life distributes information on fetal development, abortion's physical and emotional consequences, and a list of crisis pregnancy centers around the state that can help them choose life instead of abortion. To this end we have increased our base of contact with young people by posting this web site.

*We have sponsored a state wide TV advertising campaign that is intended to steer young women and men toward counselling and help for those who feel unable to continue their pregnancies. The ads feature a phone number that refers them to Care Net.

*We have issued a Pro-Life license plate. It says, " Choose Life".   Each one that is purchased will generate $20, a percentage of which will go toward a project to assist Care Net and other crisis pregnancy centers in Montana.  Pending final Board of Directors' approval, we hope to purchase and place sonogram equipment throughout the state. Statistics have shown that 9 out of 10 women who are contemplating abortion change their minds after seeing a sonogram of their baby. It is one of the most effective tools available to us, and yet many of our Crisis Pregnancy Centers and Hospitals in small towns in Montana do not have a sonogram machine. In addition, the license plates are a very visible show of support for those who uphold the Right to Life in Montana. There are a lot of us!  We should start to speak up and let others know that we are a force to be reckoned with. Others will be encouraged to join us when they see that they are not alone.

*We have purchased a billboard that will be moved to different locations throughout the state- also intended to make a positive impact on those who see it.  In addition, several of the Montana Right to Life Chapters have erected and maintain billboards.

It is absolutely vital to the Right to Life movement to retain President Bush for another term. It is the president who appoints the members of the Supreme Court. Unless the makeup of the Supreme Court changes significantly in the next few years, we stand no chance of overturning Roe v. Wade.  Without a pro-life majority in Congress, all our bills will fail.  President Bush and the current make-up of the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate have demonstrated the most hope for the Right To Life Movement since 1973. Successes at the national level were outstanding.  The Partial Birth Abortion Ban and the Unborn Victims of Violence Bill passed the House and Senate and were signed into law by President Bush.    If that trend can gain impetus, with our help, by electing Pro-Life legislators then we have a real chance, for the first time since Roe versus Wade, of overturning elective legalized abortion on demand.

Is that our goal? You bet it is! I'm proud to say so, too.  It is a very vital and worthwhile goal, and one to which I devote a lot of time, energy, and prayer, as do all the members of  The Montana Right to Life Board of Directors. But the bottom line is, unfortunately, that we can not elect a Pro-Life government without money.  In the election of 2002, it was the candidate with the most money who won every race for the Montana Legislature.  It's the unfortunate reality of politics. But we can run and
win this race, if you will help us.

Please prayerfully consider a donation to build a brighter future for unborn children in Montana. Your gift of any amount, $5, $10, $25, $50, $100, or more will greatly benefit the Pro-Life work of Montana Right to Life and help you to take an active part in the upcoming election.  Electing Pro-Life candidates is essential to protecting the small and helpless ones among us!

Contributions to the Political Action Committee are not tax-deductible, and are carefully recorded in keeping with the requirements of the Secretary of State and Office of Political Practices. Please be sure to  indicate clearly any Political Action Committee contribution, and include your name, address, and phone number with every donation so that follow up calls can be made to ensure our compliance with these requirements. Donations may be sent to:

In addition to your financial contribution, I encourage each and every one of you to check the list of candidates on this web site and find the one who is pro-life in your district. If there isn't a pro-lifer running for the legislature, then look at some of the other races. Please volunteer to help these candidates.  Your support may make the difference in a win or a loss for them and life or death for thousands of babies.

There is another way that you can help. All it would take would be a phone call from you. Time and time again, we have seen pro-life legislation pass easily - only to be set aside in the courts.  If any of you can give us insight as to whether a judge on our state ballot is pro-life or not, please call the state office at 406-443-0827 or the office of Montana Right to Life President, at 406-932-4599. The judges are non-partisan, but we all know they are not unbiased. It is extremely difficult to give an endorsement to our voters on the judicial races without help from people who know them.

Please be aware that we are not in the office at all times, so be prepared to leave a message.  Both Gregg and I make every effort to respond to every call, but can only do that if we know who you are. There is a lot to do between now and November. The more volunteers, the more voices, the more votes, the better it will be for the unborn.

Thank you, and God Bless You,
Lianna Karlin
